In the mating season, the male fish develop red marriage color around the eyes, tip       of the mouth and on the tails.

*KAWACHI Cotton:

It’s cultivated in the Kawachi (an old name of a region lies in a north-south direction on the east side of Osaka).

Its thick and short fiber is hollow inside and less twisted which makes the cloth thick, heavy and durable. It was used for NOREN (shop curtains),bedclothes,

and workwear.  But it was difficult to spin on the spinning machines so that its manufacture fell into decline in the MEIJI era(the late 19th century)

Now, it is mixed with long fiber cotton(upland cotton) and is easier to spin on modern spinning machines.  So this traditional craft is producing garments such as KIMONO and YUKATA(summer kimono).

*Characteristics of Kawachi Cotton Patterns:

Kawachi Cotton have various patterns. Striped and plaid patterns are woven with threads which were plant-dyed in advance. Others are indigo dyed patterns using glue-resist dyeing or stencil dyeing, techniques which were carried out from the late Edo era(the beginning of the 19th century).

Its unique character is that the patterns are described as big and powerful.

Traditional patterns such as Hemp leaves and SHIPPO(linked gems) are put together with seasonal floral designs.

Also we can see many arabesque patterns which originated from Greece of Arabia,  and these are combined with typical Japanese natural designs such as plants and animals, for example: peony arabesque, chrysanthemum arabesque, paulownia arabesque, cranes and arabesque.

The patterns are arranged geometrically and use light and shade to give a three- dimensional effect.
